Artist Meg Stockwell paints a buckeye tree

Faculty Glade buckeye tree

BERKELEY — In the warm spring air, Berkeley resident Meg Stockwell (left) used Sumi brush technique to capture the essence of the gnarled buckeye tree (right) outside the campus’s Faculty Club. Stockwell and fellow students of artist Joan Hoffman set up under Faculty Glade trees on Wednesday, paying tribute to artist Chiura Obata, who taught at Berkeley in the 1930s, by practicing brushwork in his style. Obata’s own painting of the buckeye, done in 1932, hangs in the Faculty Club lobby.
