Campanile closing July 5 for six weeks

By Carol Ness

Berkeley’s Campanile will be closed for six weeks starting Tuesday, July 5, to allow for construction that will make the tower accessible to all visitors. It will reopen on Saturday, Aug. 13, if the construction goes as planned.

The work will focus on the approach to Sather Tower and the doorway. The brick and granite at the entrance will be temporarily removed, the foundation at the entrance will be rebuilt with an approach that has a gentler slope and then the brick and granite will be replaced. No part of the esplanade is included.

The changes, while improving access, should not be apparent once the work is completed.

Safety considerations require the tower to remain closed during construction. The Capital Projects team in charge of the work apologizes for any inconvenience the closure causes. Any questions or concerns about the project should be directed to UC Berkeley Capital Projects, (510) 643-4793.
