UC Berkeley's new Cal Day website, calday.berkeley.edu

New this year for Cal Day — Berkeley’s annual chance to strut its stuff for the public — is an interactive website stocked with complete information about the campuswide open house as well as features to let visitors share their experience with each other and the world. The day-long campuswide open house takes place Saturday, April 21.

The website, calday.berkeley.edu, features a searchable program of all 300 events planned for Cal Day, and also offers a live Twitter feed (#sharecalday) and a live Flickr Photostream (visitors can email their photos to sharecalday@berkeley.edu).

The website, built by the Office of Public Affairs, is optimized for both desktop users and users of Berkeley’s mobile site, allowing visitors to search and find events from their phones while the day is in progress.

Among the website’s top features are a slideshow of highlighted events with links, and the ability to browse the entire program, or by category, time or keyword. Lists carry recommendations for specific groups, such as prospective students or families with kids. And people who are planning ahead can email an event or a list of events to themselves.

The site also carries information about campus tours, food options, parking, transportation and other visitor services.

Berkeley’s mobile site, accessible through the UC Berkeley app, will use geo-location and calendaring functionality to let visitors find events that are located nearby and starting within the next 30 minutes, complete with walking distance and links you to the campus map. People can also use it to view and contribute to the live Twitter and Flickr feeds on Cal Day.
