Tackling the global energy challenge

By Public Affairs

The first public-private research center dedicated to harnessing bioscience breakthroughs to develop new clean-energy solutions, the Energy Biosciences Institute is leading the world’s quest to transition from today’s carbon-based energy economy. Backed by a 10-year, $500 million funding commitment from BP, the multidisciplinary initiative partners UC Berkeley, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Focused on next-generation biofuels and renewable sources of energy, EBI research efforts are also targeting increased efficiency in the extraction and conversion of fossil fuels, and improved energy recovery and carbon sequestration to mitigate climate change.
