UC Berkeley again tops public university rankings

By Public Affairs

UC Berkeley once again tops the chart in the latest US News and World Report rankings of public national universities.

UCLA, the University of Virginia and the University of Michigan followed on Berkeley’s heels in the 2013 Guide to Best Colleges, made public this week. Five of the 10 top-ranked public national universities are UC campuses, and all eight made the top 50 (UCSF and Merced were not included in the category).

Among all universities, Berkeley remained 21st. US News also listed Berkeley among the top universities in strong commitment to teaching, high degree of economic diversity, least amount of student debt upon graduation and high guidance-counselor choice. Berkeley was the top public university picked by high-school counselors and ranked second behind UCLA in economic diversity, with 38 percent of students receiving a Pell Grant.

Among undergraduate programs ranked by peer academics, Berkeley placed third for business and engineering, the same as last year.
