Nobelist in physics got his start at Berkeley

By Public Affairs

David Wineland, the physicist who today won a Nobel Prize, got his start in physics at UC Berkeley.

He graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in 1965, and went on to Harvard to earn his master’s and Ph.D. in physics. Since 1978, he has been a physicist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the University of Colorado in Boulder. He shared the Nobel Prize in Physics with French physicist Serge Haroche.

According to NIST’s website, Wineland and Haroche were honored “for ground-breaking experimental methods that enable measuring and manipulation of individual quantum systems.” He was awarded the National Medal of Science in 2007.
