Student groups to hold Prop. 30 forum Tuesday, Oct. 30

By Public Affairs

A student-sponsored forum on Proposition 30, the revenue-raising initiative supported by Gov. Jerry Brown, will be held Tuesday, Oct. 30, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The event takes place in Eshelman Library (located on the seventh floor of Eshelman Hall ), and is open to members of the campus community and the public.

Three panelists will share their perspectives on the proposition’s pros and cons, and its financial implications for UC: State Assemblymember Nancy Skinner (D Berkeley); Sue Caro, chair of the Alameda County Republican Party; and Peter Taylor, UC’s executive vice president and chief financial officer. Academic Senate Chair Christina Maslach will moderate. A Q&A session will follow the panelists’ opening statements.

If approved by California voters, Prop. 30 would temporarily increase the state sales-tax rate, and the personal-income tax rate for those with incomes above $250,000; revenues generated would be directed to schools and public-safety programs. The state’s 2012-13 budget plan, approved by the Governor and the Legislature in June 2012, assumes passage of the measure.

The forum is sponsored by the campus’s student-government organizations, the Associated Students University of California (ASUC) and the Graduate Assembly (GA), with support from the following campus entities: the Berkeley Division of the Academic Senate, the Office of the Dean of Students, Government and Community Relations and the Office of Public Affairs.
