Frost may still be whitening Bay Area roofs at night, but make no mistake — summer is on its way. And registration for UC Berkeley’s welter of summer camps and classes is opening up.

As always, the choices are many and varied. Challenges are offered indoors and out, in labs and in campgrounds, in books and in pools, on just about any topic that might interest a young person. The physically inclined can skateboard, rock climb, sail or sea kayak, windsurf or glide around on a stand-up paddleboard. Young scientists and entrepreneurs can find camps to capture their passions. So can high schoolers who aspire to college, and writers eager to hone their skills at putting their thoughts into words. The four-week Summer High School Apprentice Researchers Program (SHARP) offers students a chance to experience life in a real lab.

Some camps run all day, others just for a few hours.

The choices can be browsed on the UC Berkeley Summer Camp website, which just went live. The site offers brief descriptions of the many programs and their fees, deadlines and other registration requirements, and/or links to sites that contain full details and contact information.

The camps tend to fill up fast. Costs vary. And some registration and application deadlines are near.
