Dirks inauguration reminder: Still time to sign up for the festivities

As the inauguration of Chancellor Nicholas Dirks nears, Berkeley students, staff, faculty, alumni and guests are reminded that they are invited to participate in the symposia, rally, tailgate and other festivities.

Dirks will be inaugurated as UC Berkeley’s 10th chancellor on Friday, Nov. 8, with tradition-rich celebrations that will honor the university’s history, achievements and plans for the future.

Among the festivies planned are:

Inaugural symposia, featuring panels of Berkeley faculty and guest scholars on the topics of undergraduate education; the role of the global university. and innovation in basic and applied research. The panels are open to faculty, staff, students (Cal ID required) and invited guests. They begin at 9 a.m. in the Chevron Auditorium at International House.

Inaugural rally, a student-sponsored event open to all. It starts at 12:15 p.m. on the steps at Sproul Plaza.

Inaugural procession, featuring alumni, staff, faculty and delegates from institutions around the world in academic robes. Advance registration is required for the 1:30 p.m. event.

Inaugural Ceremony, officially inaugurating Dirks as chancellor, featuring speakers, presentations and the Ceremony of Investiture, to be followed by a reception. The Zellerbach Auditorium ceremony is open to the public but seating is limited and advance tickets are required. The ceremony starts at 3 p.m.

Inaugural Tailgate, 2 1/2 hours before the kickoff of the Cal vs. USC football game on Saturday, Nov. 9. Tailgate is planned for Hearst North Field, next to Hearst Gym.
