Regents appoint Claude Steele as new provost, EVC

By Carol Ness

The UC regents have approved the selection of Claude Steele, a preeminent scholar of social psychology and dean of Stanford University’s Graduate School of Education, as the next executive vice chancellor and provost of UC Berkeley.

Chancellor Nicholas Dirks announced Steele’s selection on Jan. 13, and approval came Thursday (Jan. 23) at the regents’ meeting at UCSF.

“We are all delighted that Professor Steele will join the Berkeley campus,” said George Breslauer, current provost and EVC, who is retiring. “And I am personally thrilled to be handing over the reins to someone so well suited to this role.”

Steele will step into his new role on March 31.
