Media Advisory: Special campus screening of Cesar Chavez feature film

By Kathleen Maclay

WHAT: A free screening by the University of California, Berkeley’s Center for Latin American or Studies (CLAS) of the film, “Cesar Chavez.”

Directed by Diego Luna, the film tells the story of the late Cesar Chavez, a migrant farmworker, labor leader, civil rights activist and the iconic co-founder of the United Farm Workers of America (UFW). Chavez led a historic movement to bring health, safety, higher wages and dignity to the farm laborers supporting California’s multi-billion-dollar agriculture industry and to agricultural operations in other states as well.

The UFW campaign, known for its effective headline-generating non-violent labor strikes and protests, resulted in passage of the historic California Agricultural Labor Relations Act , which gave farmworkers the right to collective bargaining.

WHEN: 7 p.m., Wednesday, March 5

WHERE: Wheeler Auditorium, UC Berkeley, near the center of campus.

WHO: After the screening, CLAS director Harley Shaiken will moderate a conversation with the film’s director Diego Luna, current UFW president Arturo Rodriguez and Maria Echaveste, a lecturer at the UC Berkeley Law School.

DETAILS: Tickets will be available from noon to 5:30 p.m. on March 5, at the Cal Performances box office at Zellerbach Hall. There is a limit of two tickets per person and tickets must be picked up in person.

Audience members must be in their seats by 6:50 p.m. Any empty seats will be filled. Note that due to other campus events on the same evening, filmgoers are strongly encouraged to arrive early.

The event is co-sponsored with UC Berkeley’s Office of the Chancellor and the Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost.
