John Alper uses an electron microscope image of nanowires to create a digital image he calls Nano Cityscape.

The free exhibit, accompanied by live music, refreshments, lectures and artist demonstrations, is presented jointly by the Energy Biosciences Institute (EBI) and Science@Cal.

WHEN: 5:30-9 p.m. Thursday and Friday, Feb. 27-28, 2014

WHERE: Energy Biosciences Building lobby, located at 2151 Berkeley Way, Berkeley

WHO: Four artists, scientists and engineers will discuss their work in featured talks:

  • Carlo Sequin, UC Berkeley professor emeritus of electrical engineering and computer science, on “The Art of Minimal Energy” (Feb. 27, 6:30 p.m.)
  • Louise Glass, UC Berkeley professor of plant and microbial biology & EBI researcher, on “ Neurospora crassa : Portrait of a Fabulous Fungus” (Feb. 27, 7:30 p.m.)
  • Michele Koo, herpetologist & researcher in UC Berkeley’s Museum of Vertebrate Zoology, on “A Tribute to the Art and Life of Robert Stebbins” (Feb. 28, 6:30 p.m.)
  • Anand Varma, UC Berkeley alumnus & National Geographic contributing photographer, on “Kite-Powered Photographs of Patagonia” (Feb. 28, 7:30 p.m.)

DETAILS: Colorful wildlife portraits by the late UC Berkeley biologist Robert Stebbins; photographs of “big science” projects by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory photographer Roy Kaltschmidt; origami (folded paper) figures of endangered animals by wildlife biologist and UC Berkeley alum Bernie Peyton; and “new energy” images from experiments in the EBI are just a few of the exhibited works showing how science is expressed through art and how art inspires science.

Also on exhibit will be photos, illustrations, video and digital art from the fields of anthropology, biofuels, plant science, astrophysics and space science.
