Dirks to speak at the Commonwealth Club on the future of the public university

What role should a public university play in 2014? UC Berkeley Chancellor Nicholas Dirks believes the future of the public sphere, of civil society and of democracy is at serious risk as students focus on subjects tied  directly to vocational aspirations. Instead, he argues for renewed embrace of the utopian goals that form the foundations stones of the nation’s public universities.

Dirks will make his case for restoring public universities to their utopian roots In an appearance before the Commonwealth Club of California on Wednesday, March 12. The  program is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. in the club’s San Francisco office. He is appearing as part of the club’s Series on Ethics and Accountability,
