Chancellor Nicholas Dirks released the following statement this morning (Wednesday, April 9):
Today is “National Educators Coming Out Day,” when leaders in education are publicly affirming their support for undocumented students, and on behalf of the UC Berkeley community I want to express our commitment to welcoming and supporting undocumented students on our campus.
As part of this weeklong, nationwide initiative, students at Berkeley will be leading a series of “UndocuWeek” activities, which will include a variety of educational programs and workshops. We are proud to admit talented students regardless of their immigration status, and, building on the excellent work of our Undocumented Student Program, I hope to expand our efforts to provide undocumented undergraduate and graduate students with the guidance, service and sustained support they need to thrive and succeed.
Our campus is enriched by their presence, and I am determined to ensure that undocumented students are, like every other student, fully able to take advantage of the extraordinary educational, intellectual, cultural and social opportunities Berkeley provides.
Chancellor, UC Berkeley
