U.S. House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi will deliver the 2014 commencement address at the University of California, Berkeley.
Pelosi, who has represented San Francisco, California’s 12th District for over 26 years and led House Democrats for over a decade, will address graduating seniors, faculty, administrators and guests at the 2014 campus-wide Commencement in California Memorial Stadium on Saturday, May 17.
“We are honored to welcome Nancy Pelosi to deliver the keynote address at our 2014 commencement,” Chancellor Nicholas Dirks said. “Leader Pelosi’s groundbreaking career represents the very best in public service for our state, our country and the world. Our graduates will benefit greatly from her experience and wisdom as they set out to make their mark on the world.”
In 2007, Pelosi became the first woman to serve as speaker of the House, a position she held until 2011. She first made history in 2002 when House Democrats elected her the first woman to lead a major political party in Congress.
The ceremony also will feature an address by Chancellor Nicholas Dirks, his first as chancellor, and a speech from the soon-to-be named university medalist, the top graduating senior from the class of 2014.
