Guggenheim fellowships awarded to 3 UC Berkeley faculty

Three UC Berkeley faculty have been awarded John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation fellowships, the foundation has announced. The 2015 awards went to 175 scholars, scientists and artists who have shown “prior achievement and exceptional promise” to assist them in furthering their work in their field of study.

This year’s fellows, who were chosen from more than 3,100 applicants in the United States and Canada, include 13 scholars from seven UC campuses. Here are the three fellows from UC Berkeley:

Andrew F. Jones is a professor and Louis B. Agassiz Chair in Chinese in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures. In 2011, he published Developmental Fairy Tales: Evolutionary Thinking and Modern Chinese Culture, a study on developmental thinking in modern Chinese literature and popular culture.

Vikram Chandra is a senior lecturer in the English department, where he teaches creative writing. His first novel, Red Earth and Pouring Rain, won the 1996 Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for Best First Book, and his most recent book, Geek Sublime: The Beauty of Code, the Code of Beauty (2014), was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award (Criticism).

Nicholas D. Paige is a professor of French and the author of Before Fiction: The Ancient Régime of the Novel, which offers a new understanding of the early history of the genre in England and France.
