Students’ Earth Week celebration kicks off Sunday

As Earth Day turns 45, Berkeley students are planning a seven-day smorgasbord of environmentally themed happenings, beginning April 19.

EarthUC Berkeley’s Earth Week celebration kicks off Sunday afternoon with a “words of the watershed” soiree. On Earth Day itself – Wednesday, April 22 – the centerpiece is the campus’s 12th annual sustainability summit, a yearly opportunity to take stock of progress in greening the campus, and to honor exceptional programs and individuals.

On social media, the plan is to use #calearthweek. If you prefer to get your hands dirty to support the planet, check out volunteer opportunities on Thursday morning (helping to restore Strawberry Creek) and Saturday (at Clark Kerr Garden).

That’s leaving out a cooking demo with Cal Dining and journalist and food writer Mark Bittman, a look at the business side of alternative energy, Kombucha parties, a Planet Earth new-play festival and film screenings of “Cowspiracy,” “Interstellar” and “Thirsty for Justice” (to name just a few of more of 40 planned events).

For a complete listing, see the campus’s 2015 Earth Week calendar, or download a PDF version there.
