Nearly two dozen graduate students from across the UC system, along with graduate deans from all 10 campuses, made the rounds to state legislative offices at UC’s sixth annual Graduate Research and Education Advocacy Day in Sacramento, April 28.

Among those fanning out through the Capitol building to advocate for graduate education were Fiona Doyle, dean of the Graduate Division at UC Berkeley, and Berkeley doctoral students Rachel Golden, from public policy and the Energy and Resources Group, and Andre Carrel of civil and environmental engineering.

Both Ph.D. students are doing research related to transportation policy, so they made a point to meet with legislative staff working on transportation policy.

“We need all of you to help us figure out how to solve the many complex transportation issues facing our state,” commented Janet Dawson, chief consultant for the California State Assembly Committee on Transportation, upon meeting with the UC Berkeley scholars. Dawson added that she hoped to work with Berkeley grad students on public-policy issues in the future. “It makes perfect sense,” she said.

The Cal contingent also visited Berkeley Law alum Henry Stern, now a senior policy adviser for state Sen. Fran Pavley (D-LA).
