UC Berkeley is among the nation’s top universities producing Fulbright Scholars this academic year.

Berkeley placed sixth on the list of top institutions, with six faculty members selected as Fulbright Scholars. Thirteen other campuses, including UCLA, also had six Fulbright scholars. The nation’s top producer was Arizona State at Tempe, with 10.

Fulbright Scholars are sent abroad to study, lecture and do research for up to a year.

In addition, 14 UC Berkeley students were selected for the Fulbright Students program, which gives fellowships to graduating seniors and graduate students study or teach English abroad for one year.

The Fulbright program, funded by the U.S. State Department, awards some 8,000 grants annually through its various programs.  It was founded by U.S. Sen. J. William Fulbright in 1946 to increase mutual understanding between the U.S. and other countries.
