Carol T. Christ, interim executive vice chancellor and provost at UC Berkeley, sent this message today to the campus community:

Dear Colleagues:

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Tsu-Jae King Liu as vice provost for academic and space planning, for an initial two-year period with the possibility of extension at the discretion of the next chancellor and my successor.

Tsu-Jae King Liu

Tsu-Jae King Liu

Tsu-Jae joined the Berkeley faculty in 1996, as assistant professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences (EECS), becoming full professor in 2003. She has earned distinctions for her teaching, mentorship and research, and presently holds the TSMC Distinguished Professorship in Microelectronics. Her current area of research focus is in advanced materials, process technology and solid-state devices for energy-efficient electronics. She received her B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Stanford University.

During her time at Berkeley, Tsu-Jae has served in a wide variety of administrative roles. She was vice chair for graduate matters in EECS from 2003-04, associate dean for research (College of Engineering) from 2008-2012, associate chair and then chair in EECS from 2012-2016 and now associate dean for academic planning and development (College of Engineering). She also has served as faculty director of the UC Berkeley Microfabrication Laboratory and subsequently the Marvell Nanofabrication Laboratory. In addition, she has served on the Academic Senate’s Committee for Academic Planning and Resource Allocation and Graduate Council. Tsu-Jae has made issues of climate, inclusion and diversity priorities in her administrative service. Her appointment as vice provost will begin on Oct. 1, 2016.

The vice provost for academic and space planning (VPASP) is a critical leadership position for the Berkeley campus, charged with overseeing the overall programmatic direction of the university and its interaction with the use of space on campus. The VPASP plays an integrative role in the campus administration, serving as a leader and creative thought partner across broad intellectual areas, recognizing and coordinating synergies as they develop in academic programs, and supporting the growth and development of current and emerging disciplines through comprehensive program and space initiatives and reviews. Additionally, the VPASP oversees the campus’s international agreements and partnerships.

On behalf of Chancellor Dirks, please join me in thanking Tsu-Jae for accepting this appointment. We are extremely grateful to her and look forward to working with her to build on the excellent work she has done in the College of Engineering.

Cordially,

Carol Christ
Interim Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost
