UC Berkeley Chancellor Dirks and Carol Christ, executive vice chancellor and chancellor-designate, today sent this message to the campus community:

Dear campus community,

We are very pleased to announce the appointment of Diana Harvey as UC Berkeley’s next associate vice chancellor for communications and public affairs. Harvey comes to our campus from Duke University, where she currently serves as director of communications, marketing and alumni engagement for the Duke Global Health Institute. Harvey previously served as chief communications officer and deputy chief of staff to the president at the University of Minnesota. She will begin her new role at Berkeley on August 1.

Harvey joins our campus at a critical time, as we continue to tell compelling stories about the excellence and diversity of Berkeley to sustain and enhance support for our public mission, and as we endeavor to improve our systems of internal communication with an eye towards increasing transparency and collaboration. In her role as associate vice chancellor, Harvey will direct Berkeley’s Office of Communications and Public Affairs — staffed with writers, videographers, designers, marketers, digital communications specialists, media relations personnel, and visitor and parent services staff — as well as offer senior counsel to campus leadership, provide central direction for communicators across campus, and serve as an important liaison to the UC Office of the President.

Harvey brings to Berkeley substantial experience in higher education communications, both from her time at Duke and at the University of Minnesota. There, she oversaw the U of M’s advertising and brand campaign, held a key role in communications around the university’s efforts to improve campus climate, and, alongside development and government relations colleagues, led a public outreach drive that enabled the school to hit fundraising records and receive its first state funding increase in six years. We have no doubt that Harvey will be a valuable addition to our campus, leading our efforts to show the world the best of Berkeley while also helping the administration improve systems for engaging with campus constituencies.

Harvey’s appointment marks the culmination of a long search process, and we would like to publicly thank search committee chair Scott Biddy, as well as the entire search committee, for their diligent work. We’d also like to thank Assistant Chancellor for Government and Community Relations Chris Treadway for leading the communications and public affairs function on an interim basis as we undertook this search process.

Please join us in welcoming Diana Harvey to the Berkeley campus.

Sincerely,

Nicholas Dirks                                    Carol Christ
