Free T-shirts and food trucks? Must be Summerfest

By Public Affairs

Thousands of UC Berkeley staff flocked to the West Crescent lawn Wednesday afternoon to celebrate the 31st Summerfest, part of the campus’s annual Staff Appreciation Week. Eventgoers noshed on food truck fare, from waffles to falafel, picked up a free T-shirt, struck a pose for fun photos and grooved to San Francisco-based party band Wonder Bread 5.

Summerfest was just one of several events of the week. Na’ilah Nasir, Berkeley’s vice chancellor for equity and inclusion, gave a keynote speech on Tuesday. “For me it’s about, What are the values we aspire to as a society around equity?” she said. “And always keeping in the frame the historical and current injustices in the way systems operate that land us where we are.”

As part of a larger effort to build some movement into the workday, staffers will lace up their tennis shoes Friday, and join Chancellor-designate Carol Christ and other campus leaders on a group walk, ending with a flash mob on Memorial Glade.

For the rest of the week, staff can enjoy some extra perks on campus, including $5 discounted meals at Crossroads Dining Hall, $1 coffee at Equator and a 20 percent discount off Cal merchandise.
