In fall 2002, the campus’s Naval, Army and Air Force ROTC programs experience a surge in enrollment. Reasons cited include the bad economy and the ROTC’s numerous scholarships, invaluable opportunities for leadership training and the chance to contribute post-9/11 to the war on terrorism.
The Military Affairs Program, which encompasses each of the military officers’ commissioning programs, also draws students from other universities in the Bay Area. Naval ROTC, which includes the Marine Corps program, serves UC Berkeley, UC Davis, Stanford University and the California Maritime Academy, while the Air Force and Army draw from almost 30 local universities and community colleges. UC Berkeley students account for nearly half of each program’s enrollment, and courses are open to all students on campus.
