Lavanya Harinarayan, a 22-year-old computer science major, realized she was spending too much time in the lab. So she did something the high-school version of herself never could have imagined: She joined lightweight crew.
“I was up before dawn most mornings, rowing,” the Troy, Michigan, native said. “It actually made me a more diligent student.”
Harinarayan grew close with her fellow teammates and found friends she never would have met in the basement of Soda Hall, Berkeley’s computer science lab.
“I had the opportunity to really get out of my comfort zone,” she said.
Harinarayan starts in February as a software engineer at Twitter.
