Documentaries by two J-School alums make Oscar shortlist

Dan Krauss, Daphne Matziaraki

Two films by alumni of UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism are on the shortlist of documentary contenders for Oscars, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts announced recently.

The two are among just 10 films on the list. Five will earn nominations.

One of the films is Daphne Matziaraki’s thesis film 4.1 Miles, which depicts the refugee crisis in her native Greece. Matziaraki, a 2016 graduate in documentary filmmaking, has already been honored with a Student Academy Award, which automatically put her in the running for an Oscar.

The other film is Extremis, by J-School lecturer and 2004 alum Dan Krauss. Filmed at Highland Hospital in Oakland, the film explores the decisions that doctors, families and patients face in urgent end-of-life cases, also made the contenders list. It premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and was named Best Documentary Short. It is also nominated for Best Short at the International Documentary Association Awards.
