Eight campus lab research grounds and one core facility have won recognition for their work promoting safe practices and a culture of safety at UC Berkeley.

The winners of the Office of Environment, Health & Safety’s second annual Excellence in Laboratory Safety awards were announced recently by Vice Chancellor for Research Paul Alivisatos at a Faculty Club ceremony.

The 2016 grand prize was awarded to Dr. David Schaffer, his lab safety coordinator Noem Ramey and their research group. The award was presented by 2015 grand prize winner, Irfan Siddiqi during the ceremony.

The awards program was developed by EH&S in 2015. It recognizes small and large labs from four categories: chemical sciences, life sciences, field sciences and physical sciences. The labs are evaluated based on the variety of hazards they are confronted with, the findings from EH&S lab inspections, the strength of safety leadership demonstrated by the principal investigator, and the follow-up and communications of the lab safety coordinator. Among the labs that win within these categories, a grand prize winner is selected and awarded the Excellence in Laboratory Safety trophy.
