WHAT

William J. Perry, a former U.S. Secretary of Defense, will be the featured guest at a screening at the University of California, Berkeley, of the documentary film, The Nuclear Tipping Point.

The documentary, released earlier this year, centers on conversation with four men intimately involved in American diplomacy and national security over the last 40 years: Perry, former U.S. Secretary of State George Shultz, former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, and Sam Nunn, a former U.S. senator. In the film, they outline the imminent risks of nuclear weapons and steps the United States and other countries must take immediately to reduce the nuclear threat.

This is such an important problem in my mind, that it dwarfs all other considerations, and I have, myself, decided to devote the balance of my career to working to achieve that goal, Perry said in a news release about the documentary.

Perry will field questions for an hour after the screening.

WHEN

Perry was the 19th U.S. Secretary of Defense in the Clinton administration and also served as deputy secretary of defense and undersecretary of defense for research and engineering. DETAILS

The screening is sponsored by the campuss Institute of Governmental Studies (IGS) and Institute of International Studies (IIS). It marks the formal inauguration of the Harold Smith Seminars, established to highlight UC Berkeleys expertise and involvement in national security and international politics through forums with leading voices in those fields.

The seminars will take place three times each semester. They are organized by IGS, IIS and Harold Smith, a professor at UC Berkeleys Goldman School of Public Policy. During the Clinton administration, Smith served as assistant to the U.S. secretary of defense for nuclear, chemical and biological defense programs.

The screening will be free and open to the public. Approximately 150 free copies of The Nuclear Tipping Point will be distributed. More information about the documentary is available online. More information about IGS is available on the IGS website. To learn more about IIS, go to the IIS website.

The event will be Webcast later on UC Berkeleys You Tube page.
