Chancellor Birgeneau at Green Coffee Hour

Chancellor Birgeneau accepts a certificate of appreciation.

The Berkeley campus took yet another stride toward sustainability Monday, as California Hall hosted its second annual “Green Coffee Hour,” the kickoff for a paper-towel composting program meant to help the campus cut its greenhouse-gas emissions to 1990 levels by the year 2014.

Some 40 staff members and guests attended the coffee hour, co-hosted by the Campus Sustainability Program and the California Hall Green Committee.

Among them was Chancellor Robert Birgeneau, who personally tossed the inaugural paper towel into one of the green composting bins to be placed throughout the building.

In response to his sustainability efforts, the Chancellor accepted a certificate of appreciation from environmental-sciences major Katya Cherukumilli, a student leader in the campus’s Building Sustainability @ Cal Program.
