UC Berkeley emergency procedures

By Public Affairs

Recent events in Japan have led people and institutions worldwide to examine their preparedness for emergencies. UC Berkeley has a comprehensive Emergency Operations Plan overseen by Stephen Stoll, director of the campus’s Office of Emergency Preparedness (OEP), that addresses a wide variety of threats.

The OEP information below has been provided to inform the campus community of available resources and steps that each person can take when and if needed.

According to the California Department of Public Health and the U.S. Regulatory Commission, Japan’s nuclear emergency is of no immediate danger to California.

The campus’s Emergency Operations Plan addresses a wide variety of potential threats, possibilities and scenarios. The Office of Emergency Preparedness (OEP) supports the Berkeley campus community by implementing programs in emergency planning to build, sustain and improve the capacity of the university to mitigate against, prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergency disasters.

In the event of an emergency, updated information will be made available through the campus web page ( www.berkeley.edu or emergency.berkeley.edu ); its emergency hotline 1-800-705-9998; and the campus radio station KALX, 90.7 FM.

All members of the campus community are reminded to make sure they are prepared for a major emergency , such as an earthquake, and are encouraged to sign up for WarnMe ,  the campus’s emergency alert system that sends information to subscribers by e-mail, text, or phone. If you are already signed up for WarnMe, please keep your contact information up to date.
