For the second year in a row, the Lawrence Hall of Science is taking family-friendly, hands-on science to the South Lawn of the White House for the annual Easter Egg Roll.

Director Elizabeth Stage, along with Hall staff and colleagues in science education, will guide kids in building paper-bag kites and spinning bunny copters today (Monday, April 25) at the popular holiday event. Some 30,000 people – children 12 and under and their families – are expected to attend.

The 2011 Easter Egg Roll is focused on promoting health and wellness with the theme, “Get Up and Go!” All of the activities encourage children to lead healthy and active lives, which is a central part of First Lady Michelle Obama’s ‘Let’s Move!’ initiative, a national campaign to combat childhood obesity.

The event will feature live music, sports courts, cooking stations, storytelling and a host of children’s activities in addition to egg rolling.

The Hall is presenting the activities in partnership with the National Park Foundation, the official charity of America’s national parks, which each year assists in coordinating and planning the Easter Egg Roll and also accepts donations to benefit the event. The South Lawn of the White house is considered one of the country’s 394 national parks.

Based at UC Berkeley, the Lawrence Hall of Science investigates, creates and evaluates educational materials and methods, professional development programs and hands-on learning experiences for science centers, schools, community organizations and homes. Programs from the hall serve teachers, students and families nationally and internationally.
