Two young scientists at UC Berkeley, Fotini Chow and Feng Wang, have been named winners of Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers, the highest honor bestowed by the United States government on science and engineering professionals in the early stages of their research careers.

The two professors are among 94 young scientists and engineers nationwide who were so honored, according to an announcement made yesterday by the White House.

Chow, an associate professor of civil and environmental engineering, is a specialist in environmental fluid mechanics.

Wang, an assistant professor of physics, is principal investigator of the Ultrafast Nano-Optics Group, which researches light-matter interaction in condensed matter physics.

Both were selected by the Department of Energy, one of 16 federal departments and agencies involved in nominating candidates.

The winners will receive their awards on  Oct. 14 at a White House ceremony.
