Bird’s-eye view of stadium retrofit
A video camera suspended on a crane being used to renovate California Memorial Stadium shows the seismic retrofit project as of August 8, 2011. Within the week, the frame for the press box is expected to be hoisted into place. The historic, 1923 stadium sits on top of an active earthquake fault, the Hayward Fault, and could be torn apart by a major rupture. Using novel designs, the stadium is being rebuilt so that parts of it will actually be mobile, moving with the shifting earth when a rupture occurs.
