Fire guts Southside apartment building; resources available to fire victims

Late Friday, a fire destroyed an apartment building at Telegraph and Haste. There are no reports of injuries, but we believe it may have been home for some of our students.

The campus is working on temporary housing for any students who have been displaced. For now, if you or someone you know needs a place to stay, the Red Cross asks you to call the Berkeley Police Department’s non-emergency number, (510) 981-5900. They are making temporary arrangements for people who were impacted while the campus works on finding alternative housing for students. Tonight, the Crossroads dining hall will provide food to any student who has been affected. Please just let them know that you are a victim of the recent fire.

A mobile Red Cross unit will be at the scene on Sunday, Nov. 20, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. so students and others can check in and register for assistance. On Monday, students in need of housing or other help should call (510) 642-4108. In addition, the campus will offer fire relief funds to students who have had to purchase essential living items.  Please come to the Dean of Students Office at 326 Sproul to obtain gift certificates for students to purchase bare esstentials that were lost in the fire.

More information for our community about how you can help anyone who was displaced by this fire will be available Monday. Check back here later for more details.
