A campus perspective: 'Occupy' and the crisis in higher education

The fall semester proved a particularly difficult time for UC Berkeley as the campus community braced for more cuts in state funding and students occupied Sproul Plaza to make their voices heard in defense of public education.

With the prospect of further budget cuts looming as the year draws to a close, we look ahead to 2012 and talk to a sampling of Berkeley students and staff about the importance of higher education, the impact of state disinvestment and the vital role of public support in safeguarding the future of great teaching and research institutions like the University of California.
