Feb. 27 campus memorial to honor former chancellor I. Michael Heyman

A public memorial service honoring the life of I. Michael Heyman, sixth chancellor of the University of California, Berkeley, will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 27, at International House, in the southeast corner of the UC Berkeley campus.

Heyman, who was 81, died at his Berkeley home on Nov. 19 after a long battle with emphysema.

Widely regarded as a champion of civil rights and diversity, he had a 52-year career at UC Berkeley that included a decade as chancellor, from 1980-1990. He also was a professor emeritus of law and of city and regional planning.

The event will take place at International House’s Chevron Auditorium, 2299 Piedmont Ave., Berkeley.

Scheduled speakers, in order of appearance, are:

  • John Cummins, associate chancellor emeritus, UC Berkeley
  • Sandy Kadish, professor and dean emeritus, UC  Berkeley School of Law
  • Rod Park, College of Letters & Science dean and executive vice chancellor emeritus
  • Carol Christ, president, Smith College
  • James Heyman, son, professor of physics, Macalester College, St. Paul, Minn.
  • Marc Pachter, interim director, National Museum of American History
  • Jean Firstenberg, president emerita, American Film Institute, and chair, Citizen’s Stamp Advisory Committee
  • Chris Edley, dean, UC Berkeley School of Law
  • Robert Birgeneau, chancellor, UC Berkeley

The family requests that memorial gifts be made to the I. Michael Heyman Project at UC Berkeley School of Law, or to the Ira Michael Heyman Memorial Scholarship Fund, University Relations, 2080 Addison Street, Berkeley, CA 94720-4200.
