Berkeley Library wants to hear from you

By Public Affairs

University Librarian Tom Leonard is appealing to the campus to complete a survey that will help shape library services into the future. His message, sent in an email this week outlining the information gathering effort and providing a link to the survey. It follows:

Campus Community,

All of us want campus libraries to have a solid foundation that is built on a realistic view of the campus budget. All of us have seen how networked information in a digital age offers new opportunities in our fields of study, making traditional services and collections more important in some respects, less important in others. The Library has an urgent need for your opinion on how we should change the services we offer and balance this with investments in collections.

I ask that you take the time to answer a survey that will take 10 to 15 minutes to complete. The survey and related information can be accessed at: http://tiny.cc/ucblib.

Your response will tell us about what should matter most when we ask libraries to help create, share, and preserve the work of the academy. The answers to these questions will guide face-to-face discussions with faculty and students and shape the plan we choose.

If you have ideas or concerns beyond what you tell us in the survey,  please share these by sending an email to future@library.berkeley.edu, or, of course, to me directly: TomL@Berkeley.edu.

Your comments will guide the Library’s decisions. These will be outlined in an “Outcome Letter” from me in Fall 2012. Implementation  will begin by the end of 2012 and require several years to fully accomplish. We expect and allow for feedback and course correction during all of this time.

Thank you in advance for your time.

Tom Leonard
