California Memorial Stadium to be rededicated this Saturday

ATTENTION: Weekend assignment editors, sports reporters, photo desks, TV crews

WHAT: A rededication ceremony for California Memorial Stadium at the University of California, Berkeley. The event will take place on the field at halftime during the Golden Bears vs. UCLA  Bruins game being held during Homecoming 2012 weekend.

Since it opened in 1923, the stadium has been a memorial to Californians who lost their lives in World War I. This weekend, the historic stadium, which recently reopened after a $321 million renovation and seismic upgrade, will be “re-dedicated in honor of all Californians who have sacrificed their lives in service to the nation.” A plaque with this wording will be unveiled in the stadium’s North Tunnel.

WHEN: Saturday Oct. 6. The Golden Bears vs. UCLA Bruins game begins at 7 p.m. with the rededication ceremony scheduled to start at approximately 8:30 p.m.

WHO: Rededication speeches will be given by:

  • Chancellor Robert J. Birgeneau
  • Sandy Barbour, director of Cal Athletics
  • Lt. General Susan J. Helms, Commander, 14th Air Force

Game credentials can be picked up at Gate 5 on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. A limited number of parking permits are available for the news media.
