Election-night returns on a big screen, in a big crowd

By Cathy Cockrell

Why watch the 2012 election returns alone when you can share the nail-biting hours with UC Berkeley political junkies?

This year, upper Sproul Plaza will be the main campus venue for tracking the national and state returns — on a Jumbotron sponsored by the Matsui Center, the Institute of Governmental Studies, the ASUC and Graduate Assembly. The screen goes live at 5 p.m. and the viewing party runs until midnight, or until election results are known.

Still haven’t voted?

Polling stations located around the campus area include a number of Southside residence halls. Go to www.vote411.org for polling station locations.

Another viewing event, this one with a distinctly global audience, will be held at International House auditorium. There, I House residents, Berkeley students and members of the public are invited to watch the results on a big screen from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Meanwhile, live coverage with KALW radio and OLLI@ Berkeley , featuring OLLI @Berkeley instructor Larry Bensky and KALW host Rose Aguilar, will be offered at Freight and Salvage, at 2200 Addison in downtown Berkeley. Doors open at 5 p.m.; election viewing is slated for “6 to 11 p.m., or later.”

Admission is free to OLLI @Berkeley members and UC Berkeley faculty, staff, and students (with ID), $5 donation for others. Seating is first-come, first served and online RSVP is recommended.
