Chancellor Dirks, ASUC leadership thank campus community

By Public Affairs

The following is the text of the Cal message sent by Chancellor Nicholas Dirks and ASUC leader DeeJay Pepito at 9.49pm on Tuesday, Oct 1.

Dear Campus Community,

We are writing to provide an update on the power outage that the campus has experienced. We want to assure the community that the campus is safe and that progress is being made on restoring campus services.

We are pleased to inform you that temporary power generators have been delivered to campus and are being connected as we write to Dwinelle Hall, Doe Library, California and Durant Halls. We expect that these buildings will be in full power this evening and open for business operations and classes by 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 2.

As stated in an earlier message, we ask that faculty accommodate students who may have been challenged to be prepared for class on Tuesday, Oct. 1. Students who live in the residence halls did not have power until late evening/early morning Tuesday, and therefore may not have had power for laptops, connectivity for research or adequate light to read and study. If you encounter any students who are anxious or are having difficulty coping, please direct them to resources in the Tang Center: bit.ly/copingtrauma .

It is suggested that faculty make individual arrangements concerning any makeup or replacement of work.

Classroom technology and connectivity has been restored to the classrooms and ETS will provide their normal services. If any issues remain, please call the Classroom Support Number (510) 643-8637.

In the event of any new, unanticipated power outage please contact Physical Plant Services at (510) 642-1032.

Moving forward, we will review the protocol with campus communication in emergency responses to make more conscious efforts toward students, staff, and faculty awareness in campus emergency procedures.

We fully recognize that this has been a unique and challenging experience for our community. Our thoughts and best wishes are with our student and the others who were injured Monday evening.  Thankfully, the student who was treated at a medical center has been released and is now recuperating with her family.  In addition, we want to thank all members of the community for your patience, flexibility, and cooperation in responding to this campus emergency.

Sincerely,

Nicholas Dirks            DeeJay Pepito
