National Academy of Engineering adds three UC Berkeley faculty to its ranks

By Sarah Yang

Three UC Berkeley faculty members are among the 67 new members elected today (Thursday, Feb. 6) to the National Academy of Engineering.

The new members are Carlos Daganzo, Chancellor Professor of the Graduate School in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering; J. Karl Hedrick, James Marshall Wells Academic Chair in the Department of Mechanical Engineering; and Jack Moehle, T.Y. and Margaret Lin Professor of Engineering in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

With today’s announcement, there are now 97 UC Berkeley faculty members in the NAE. Election to the academy is one of the highest professional distinctions accorded to an American engineer.

The NAE recognized the new UC Berkeley members for the following achievements:

  • Carlos Daganzo for engineering contributions to traffic, transportation, and logistics systems and operations
  • J. Karl Hedrick for analysis and control methods for nonlinear systems with application to practical problems
  • Jack Moehle for contributions to earthquake-resistant design and analysis of building structures, and for leadership in engineering education.

According to the academy, membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions to “engineering research, practice or education, including, where appropriate, significant contributions to the engineering literature,” and to the “pioneering of new and developing fields of technology, making major advancements in traditional fields of engineering, or developing/implementing innovative approaches to engineering education.”

The NAE also announced 11 new foreign associates today. This brings the total U.S. membership to 2,250, and the number of foreign associates to 214.

A full list of new academy members is included in the NAE press release .
