Bob Jacobsen named interim dean of undergrad studies in L&S

By Public Affairs

Physics professor Bob Jacobsen has been named interim dean of Undergraduate Studies in the College of Letters and Science at UC Berkeley.

Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Claude Steele, in making the announcement Wednesday, said Jacobsen would assume the post for a one-year term starting July 1.

His primary focus will be on improving the undergraduate education experience for L&S students, Steele said. Jacobsen also will oversee many of the functions that were held by Tyler Stovall, who plans to step down as dean of the Undergraduate Division in Letters and Science June 30.

Jacobsen served as associate dean of Letters and Science advising from 2006 to 2010, and is currently the executive associate dean of L&S advising. He was the chair of the Academic Senate Admissions, Enrollment and Preparatory Education (AEPE) committee from 2005-2008, and chair of the Berkeley Divisional Academic Senate during the 2011-12 academic year.

His current research is focused on a dark matter search detector located in the former Homestake Mine in South Dakota.

In his announcement, Steele also thanked Stovall for his service as dean of the Undergraduate Division since 2008.

“Tyler Stovall’s leadership, vision and accomplishments will make a lasting impact on the campus,” Steele said. “Chancellor Dirks and I are deeply grateful to Tyler for his contributions over the past six years.”
