Santa Barbara tragedy: Vigil at Berkeley Wednesday night, flags at half staff

By Public Affairs

In a shared expression of grief and solidarity prompted by Friday’s shootings near UC Santa Barbara, students at UC Berkeley will hold a candlelight vigil Wednesday evening on Memorial Glade. And UC President Janet Napolitano called for flags around the UC system to fly at half-staff through June.1.

The Berkeley campus vigil is being planned both to honor the lives lost in the shootings in Isla Vista, and “as we stand in solidarity with the families of the victims and the community at our sister campus in Santa Barbara,’ according to organizers’ posts on the event’s Facebook page.

Members of the Berkeley community and UCSB alumni living in the bay area are welcome, according to the website. More information is posted, and RSVPs are being accepted at the UCSB Candlelight Vigil at UC Berkeley event page on Facebook.

Napolitano, in her message to the UC community, expressed shock and sorrow in response to the shootings. Her full message can be read on the UC Berkeley NewsCenter.
