Media Advisory: Chancellor, campus leaders on hand as thousands move in to campus housing this weekend

ATTENTION: Higher education and general assignment reporters, weekend assignment desks, photo desks, and general assignment and feature writers.

WHAT: Chancellor Nicholas Dirks will greet students and their families as they move into University of California, Berkeley, campus housing this Saturday. He will be joined by Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Harry Le Grande and a cadre of campus ambassadors as they welcome more than 6,000 students who are expected to move in to student housing by the time classes begin on Thursday, Aug. 28.

WHEN: Credentialed news media are invited to cover move-in weekend this Saturday, Aug. 23, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Units 1 and 2, which are complexes with several residence halls.

  • Chancellor Dirks will be chatting with students and their families at Units 1 and 2 on Saturday between 10:30 a.m. and noon.

WHERE: Unit 1 is located at College Avenue and Durant Street and Unit 2 is at College Avenue and Haste Street. See campus map.

DETAILS: Move-in weekend kicks off three full weeks of activities designed to welcome new students to UC Berkeley and orient them to campus culture, the Berkeley community, and all of the campus services and resources available to them.  Highlights will include:

  • New Student Convocation, Monday, Aug. 25, 4-8 p.m. All new undergraduates are invited to hear from Chancellor Dirks and other campus leaders at this welcome event and BBQ dinner at the Greek Theatre.
  • Calapalooza, Wednesday and Thursday, September 3 and 4, 4-8 p.m. New students will be introduced to more than 300 student groups, campus services, and performers at this annual resource fair on Upper Sproul, Dwinelle and Wheeler plazas.

Parking around campus during move-in day will be extremely limited.
