Randy Schekman — UC Berkeley professor of cell and developmental biology and Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator — has been named to the prestigious Institute of Medicine, one of the highest national honors in the fields of health and medicine. The honor was announced Oct. 20, just a little over a year since Schekman won the 2013 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

The Berkeley professor is among 70 new members elected to the institute in recognition of outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service. The announcement was made during the organization’s annual meeting. Membership in the IOM is one of the highest national honors in the fields of health and medicine.

The Institute of Medicine is unique in its structure, being both an honorific membership organization and an advisory organization. Established in 1970 as the health branch of the National Academy of Sciences, it has become recognized as a national resource for independent, scientifically informed analysis and recommendations on health issues.
