Open house Thursday on planned new Berkeley Way West building

By Public Affairs

The community is invited to an open house on Thursday, Jan. 8, from 6-7:30 p.m. to learn more about UC Berkeley’s proposed new Berkeley Way West building, which would house the Graduate School of Education and the Department of Psychology, currently in seismically challenged space at Tolman Hall, as well as the School of Public Health, currently located in interim space in University Hall.

The new building and related landscaping improvements would occupy space now used as surface parking for UC Berkeley affiliates at the west edge of the block bounded by Berkeley Way to the south, Oxford Street to the east, Hearst Avenue to the north and Shattuck Avenue to the west.

Construction on the new Berkeley Way West building is proposed to begin in the summer of 2015, with anticipated occupancy by fall 2017.

Design of the new building is guided by the Berkeley Downtown Area Plan, as well as the UC Berkeley 2020 Long Range Development Plan and Physical Design Framework. The new academic building would be up to 320,000 gross square feet and up to 112 feet in height at the southwest corner of the site, stepped lower at the Hearst Avenue (north) edge of the site.

The design and development team will be on hand at the open house to provide information and answer questions about the project. Light refreshments will be served.

More information will be provided at the meeting; in the interim, questions can be directed to the campus planning office by email at planning@berkeley.edu, or by phone to Jennifer McDougall at (510) 642-7720.

The open house will be held in the Energy Biosciences Building, 2150 Berkeley Way, adjacent to the building site. Information will be available for viewing at 6 p.m., and a brief program will begin at 6:30 p.m.
