Opinion: It’s time to transform our campus climate

By Public Affairs

The campus climate at Berkeley needs improvement. That was a takeaway from a recent campuswide survey and of the Feb. 6 campus-climate symposium it helped inspire.

In an op-ed piece published in the Daily Californian, Elizabeth Halimah, assistant vice chancellor for equity and inclusion, reflects on how student speakers at the symposium “put the survey data into context,” making it “real and tangible” by describing campus incidents that left them feeling excluded, stereotyped or objectified.

What is to be done? Halimah details her proposal for a three-pronged strategy.

The climate survey has done its job of informing us, she writes. “It’s now up to up to us — collectively and individually — to transform UC Berkeley into a place where everyone is respected and valued.”
