Media Advisory: Cal Day to feature BANDALOOP performances

WHAT: Cal Day , UC Berkeley’s annual open house, with special performances by BANDALOOP , the Bay Area vertical dance company well-known for its spectacular aerial performances in public spaces around the world. Dancers will perform on the walls of the historic Jane K. Sather Campanile in celebration of its 100th birthday this year.

As many as 40,000 people from around the Bay Area and beyond flock to Cal Day each year to enjoy more than 300 free lectures, demonstrations, tours and performances in every part of the campus – from its museums and academic departments to its athletic venues and bustling plazas.

WHEN: : Saturday, April 18, with a day’s worth of events starting at 8 a.m. Two approximately 10-minute BANDALOOP performances will take place at the tower – one at 2 p.m., the other at 4 p.m. TV crews and photographers are encouraged to arrive early to check in with campus staff outside the tower and to set up in designated areas. Brief interviews with performers will be possible after each performance, at approximately 2:15 and 4:15 p.m.

NOTE: Media wishing to advance the story are welcome to come to a dress rehearsal the previous day, Friday, April 17, from 7-8 p.m. This will be primarily an opportunity to capture visuals, but brief interviews may be arranged shortly after 8 p.m.

DETAILS: In addition to the BANDALOOP performances, other Cal Day event highlights will include a conversation in Zellerbach Hall between Chancellor Nicholas Dirks and author and financial journalist Michael Lewis, a lecture on the science of happiness by psychology professor Dacher Keltner and a display of fossils from the La Brea tar pits in prehistoric Los Angeles and from some of our national parks.

BANDALOOP, which has performed in theaters and museums, on skyscrapers, bridges and billboards, at historical sites, in atriums and convention halls, on cliffs in nature and on screen, recently was the subject of a CBS profile .
