Cal Day will feature BANDALOOP performances.

NOTE: Outstanding visuals for TV crews, photographers

WHAT: Two performances on Cal Day 2015 by BANDALOOP, the Bay Area vertical dance company well-known for its spectacular aerial performances in public spaces around the world. Dancers will perform on the walls of the historic Jane K. Sather Campanile in celebration of the bell tower’s 100th birthday.

As many as 40,000 people from around the Bay Area and beyond flock to Cal Day each year to enjoy more than 300 free lectures, demonstrations, tours and performances in every part of the campus – from its museums and academic departments to its athletic venues and bustling plazas.

WHEN: This Saturday, April 18. Two approximately 10-minute BANDALOOP performances – one at 2 p.m., the other at 4 p.m. — will take place at the Campanile. Brief interviews with performers will be possible after each performance, at approximately 2:15 and 4:15 p.m., at the media check-in area.

NOTE: Reporters wishing to advance the story are welcome to come to a dress rehearsal at the tower the previous evening, on Friday, April 17, from 7-8 p.m. This will be primarily an opportunity to capture visuals, but brief interviews with the dancers may be arranged shortly after 8 p.m.

WHERE: The Jane K. Sather Campanile, UC Berkeley. See map at www.berkeley.edu/map.

More than 300 feet tall, the historic Bay Area landmark, designed by architect John Galen Howard and completed in 1915, is one of the tallest free-standing clock and bell towers in the world.

Ward and fellow dancers will perform on the Campanile's walls on Cal Day.

With large crowds expected and limited parking, credentialed TV crews and photographers are encouraged to arrive early. A few parking spaces near the tower have been reserved for TV trucks. Please use the contact information above ASAP to reserve one. Upon arrival, all members of the media should check in at the media table just below the tower for information on set-up restrictions and best places to shoot, and to request interviews with the dancers. These interviews will take place at the media check-in area after each performance.

DETAILS: BANDALOOP, led by artistic director Amelia Rudolph, has performed in theaters and museums, on skyscrapers, bridges and billboards, at historical sites, in atriums and convention halls, on cliffs in nature and on screen. It recently was the subject of a CBS profile. The company offers the media these high-resolution photos and a two-minute reel. An interview with BANDALOOP dancer and Berkeley grad Andrew Ward is on the UC Berkeley NewsCenter.

The Campanile’s centennial is being celebrated on a special Campanile 100th website that contains photos, video and a historical timeline.
