As the death toll continues to rise from Saturday’s devastating earthquake in Nepal, the Nepali Student Association at UC Berkeley has invited the campus community to a candlelight vigil on Sproul Plaza at 7 p.m. on Wednesday (April 29).

“Our hearts go out to those lost or suffering in Nepal and their friends and families,” write the organizers on the event’s Facebook page . “As many of us know, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 struck Nepal on the morning of Saturday, April 25. Not only was Nepal affected, but avalanches were triggered and lives lost in Tibet, India, Bangladesh, and China.

“Here at UC Berkeley, we have fellow students who have been frantically calling their family members today hoping to get in touch. To show our support and solidarity, we will be holding a vigil on Wednesday night on Sproul to commemorate the lives that have been lost and send positive energy and prayers for those devastated by this earthquake.”

The Nepali Student Association also has started a campaign to raise funds to provide clean water to those in need in Nepal, where pipelines were damaged and water supplies  contaminated by the quake and its aftermath.
