With hugs, tears and selfies, campus celebrates same-sex marriage ruling

By Anne Brice

About one hundred UC Berkeley faculty, staff and students gathered joyously on Sproul Plaza today to celebrate the Supreme Court’s ruling to legalize same-sex marriage nationwide. The United States is now the 21st country to legalize same-sex marriage. Songs like “I’m Coming Out” by Diana Ross rang out through the air, and speakers took the microphone to share with the crowd the ways the historic decision affected their lives.

“My marriage to the man I’ve loved for 21 years is now legal from sea to shining sea,” Gar Russell, director of operations at Berkeley Law, told the crowd. “This is a huge day.”
